Summer Groups-JUST A FEW SPOTS LEFT!

(3 SPOTS LEFT) WEE ONES (2 - 4) This group is designed for parents of children ages 2-4 years who want support in the areas of sensory processing, communication and social skills. This group is set up as a play group to support children’s success during semi- structured and unstructured play settings. We provide parents with strategies to support their child’s play, social language and sensory-motor skills while being part of a play group and to help their children have fun! One week parents will be involved in training with staff while their children are given developmentally appropriate group play opportunities. The following week, parents play with their children in order to receive direct support by our therapists during group interactions.

(3 SPOTS LEFT) MAGICAL MEALTIMES (4-8) This is a play group with a focus on making food and eating fun again! This group is designed for children who are picky in their food preferences and have difficulty taking the leap to try novel foods. We use a heavy sensory exploration approach to this group, first supporting the child’s overall sensory motor system and then incorporating textures and foods into the play. Weekly take home activities will be given in order to support the child to transfer new skill into the home setting.

PLAY PARTNERS (4-12) This social pairing will support children who are at the beginning stages of interaction and communication in a social context. Children will be matched with one other “play partner” for the duration of the 8-week course. The sessions will be led by an occupational therapist, speech therapist, or education specialist and will be supported with a trained volunteer in order to allow the children to benefit from one-on-one support. As the session progresses, a similar aged peer will be invited to the pairing in order to help facilitate peer modeling and expand the interactions. Following this program, children may move on to an integrated play group in order to practice these skills in a larger context.

(1 SPOT LEFT) SENSORY-MOTOR GROUP (4-8) In this group, children with autism will be able to explore social connections and friendships in an environment using movement and sensory activities. Because of the strong movement and sensory processing focus, the skills of motor planning, coordination, and attention will be addressed in addition to the social experience.

(3 SPOTS LEFT) PEN PALS (6-10) This group will help maintain and improve your child’s writing skills in a fun and motivating way. We will use elements of various proven handwriting and visual motor programs as well as incorporating movement and fun! The focus will be on helping improve writing legibility, copying skills and ease of writing to help your child meet their full writing potential.

(2 SPOTS LEFT) ENGINES (7-10) The Engines program gives children vocabulary and strategies to take an active role in ensuring their activity level is a “match” for the activity that they are engaged in. Children learn how to identify and adapt their internal states of arousal, using words that make sense to them. Parent trainings are provided as part of this class as well as a written follow-up of strategies that are supportive of each child. This group is appropriate for a child who is able to regulate successfully with some support from an adult and who has some communication system in place. The program is effective for children who are developmentally at least 6 years of age.

(FULL) MOVE AND RELAX (YOGA 7- 12) This movement-based group uses gross motor movement activities, yoga and relaxation training to support focus, concentration, balance and relaxation. This group will also help a child develop coping skills and will support social interaction through the group focus. Activities are presented in a fun and interactive format in order to foster creative expression and imagination.

(STARTED) MAKING AND BEING A FRIEND – TEAM WORK! (8 – 12) This peer group provides children the ability to practice social skills in both structured and natural play settings. We will target the “basics” of friendship, including how to initiate and maintain play with other as well as how to show respect for different points of view. This session will also focus on the skills necessary to be a member of a team (cooperation, flexibility, working for joint outcomes). Children are encouraged to bring along a similar-aged peer to this group to help facilitate peer modeling.

(3 SPOTS LEFT) MAKING AND BEING A FRIEND – RELAXATION AND INTERACTION! (8 – 12) This peer group provides children the ability to practice social skills in both structured and natural play settings. We will target the “basics” of friendship, including how to initiate and maintain play with other as well as how to show respect for different points of view. This session will also focus on developing the coping skills necessary for when interacting with others presents challenges. We will provide group members with the opportunity to practice a variety of relaxation techniques, including taking breaks, deep breathing, and systematic relaxation.

(4 SPOTS LEFT) PARENT SENSORY SEMINAR (PARENTS) This is an in-depth training opportunity for parents of children with sensory processing disorders. This training will make you comfortable in each area of this disorder and help you to develop a detailed plan of how to help your child at home. This course will be helpful for parents whose children are in the beginning stages of receiving a diagnosis such as autism, developmental delay or sensory processing disorder as well as families who have been receiving other types of services, but are looking for a little more training and education. As this seminar will be limited to 8 families, individual attention will be able to be given to each participant in order to more specifically support your questions and concerns.

BIRTH TO THREE

ICC Is the Madison Metropolitan School Districts Birth to Three Program Provider. The Birth to Three Program provides services for children 0-3 in the MMSD area that meet the 25% delay eligibility requirement. We provide services in the natural environments of the children i.e. home, daycare etc. To make a referral call Karl at 608-204-6247

The Birth to 3 program completed a family phone survey. The results were as follows: our program helped 100% of families surveyed know their rights, helped 100% of families surveyed communicate their child’s needs, and helped 93% of families help their child develop and learn. Some comments from parents were “I appreciate the open communication and accepting attitude.” “I love that they come to my home.” “I like the written information they leave with ideas and suggestions.” “Congratulate them on their good job and great attitudes and caring. They are truly invested in my child.” “I would give them a 10/10 on everything if I could.”

Summer 2008 Autism  Training Series
Practical Approaches to Autism
Based in Neurological Understanding and Compassion

Training Dates and Topics

All About Autism:
June 20, 2008, 9:00-3:00

An introduction to the autism spectrum. Participants will be provided with an overview of the most up to date information on autism spectrum disorders, including causes, rates, recent research, diagnostic information, characteristics, sensitivity experiences and basic support strategies.

Supporting Individuals with Challenging  Behavior:
June 27, 2008, 9:00-3:00

This workshop begins by presenting a model for helping to understand the meaning and purpose behind behavior that is experienced as challenging, for the learner and others.  It looks at the challenging behavior as a result of a context that is somehow not adequately supporting the individual, and explores ways to better provide that support and structure.  All strategies are non-aversive and take into account the perspective of all individuals concerned.

Understanding Sensory Regulation:
August 1, 2008, 9:00-3:00

The fact that people on the autism spectrum need assistance across their day and across environments to regulate and maintain their arousal systems is finally well accepted by most family members and classroom teachers/staff.  This session will include an explanation of how individuals on the spectrum may experience the world differently.  It will also offer a menu of ideas that people can learn to access themselves in their homes and classrooms to help them regulate and maintain focus.

Building Communication Skills in Individuals Who Are Less Verbal:
August 8, 2008, 9:00-3:00

Participants will be introduced to the critical questions to ask when determining what kinds of visual and augmentative systems (both expressive and receptive) to develop to support all levels of students on the autism spectrum.  They will interact with various systems, and then demonstrate techniques for teaching the use of such systems across school and community environments .

Making Inclusion Work for Individuals With Autism:
August 15, 2008, 9:00-3:00

More and more schools are serving more and more students with autism every day.  Being able to do that in our schools and classrooms in a way that works for and benefits all learners can be a daunting….and exciting…..endeavor for everyone involved.  This workshop will offer ideas and tools for creating environments that support relationship development, meaningful participation and learning.

Using Visual Strategies: A Make and Take Opportunity:
August  22, 2008, 9:00-3:00

Participants will be introduced to the basic components of Social Stories™, as developed by Carol Gray, Power Cards (Gagnon, 2001), visual schedules and organizers.  They will have the opportunity to develop each of these tools in a personalized way to be used in supporting someone with autism.

Staff:   All groups are led by professionals including occupational, physical, or speech therapists and/or educational specialists.  In addition, we recruit volunteers in order to ensure a high adult-to-child ratio for optimal learning.

Specifics about ICC classes:  In order to maximize each child’s group experience, our classes will include 4-6 participants.   Unless noted in the description, our groups are not diagnosis-specific.  We will assess each child prior to enrollment in a class to ensure the best match based on parent goals and individual skill set for successful participation in each group.   If there are not 4 participants enrolled 2 weeks prior to the start of class, the group will be cancelled.  In order to ensure a space in the group, please sign up early.

Intakes:  Group intakes/screening will be held approximately 3 weeks prior to beginning of a class, on the weekday and time that a group meets when possible.  It is important for your child to participate in a screening in order to meet the group leaders and to ensure that the group focus best matches your child’s skill set and areas of continued growth.   Initial screenings are free.  If you want/require a written assessment for entrance into the group, we bill assessments at $50.

Fees:   Session fee is due on the first day of class.  Missed sessions are not refunded once the session has started.  If you know that you will be missing a week prior to the start of class, please discuss this with the intake coordinator.  If you plan to pay privately you have the option of paying in two installments, half the first week of group, and half during class on the 5th week.
